Pharmaceutical License

The purpose of a drug license in India is to regulate businesses related to drugs, medicines, and cosmetics, preventing their misuse. According to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and Rules, 1945, no individual or enterprise can deal with these products without obtaining a drug license. The Act defines "drug" broadly to include medicines, devices, and substances for human or animal use. Amendments in 1964 extended the definition to cover Ayurvedic and Unani Drugs. The regulatory framework aims to ensure the quality and safe use of drugs in the country.

In the Indian pharmaceutical business, various licenses are required:

Manufacturing License: For businesses producing drugs, including allopathic/homoeopathy medicines.

Wholesale Drug License: For wholesalers selling drugs to retailers or individuals.

Retail Drug License: For retailers involved in the sale of drugs or cosmetics to end consumers, including dispensaries, hospitals, educational institutions, and more.

Loan License: For businesses utilizing the manufacturing facilities of another license.

Import License: For dealers importing products for drug manufacturing or engaging in the importation of drugs in India.

Multi-Drug License: For businesses owning pharmacies in multiple states under the same name.
